J. BARRY WASHINGTON, MBA

Entrepreneur, Writer, and Telecommunications Pioneer

J. Barry Washington is a formidable former telecommunications executive and pioneer who established a communications and entertainment infrastructure in the City of Newark.

Mr. Washington, who was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, grew up in the Hayes Homes Public Housing Projects. 

He graduated from St. Peters / Queen of Angels School, Essex Catholic High School and Catholic University of America in Washington, DC on an academic / basketball scholarship earning a Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering. 

He worked for Exxon Chemical then he earned a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree, with concentrations in Finance, Marketing and Industrial Engineering, from Washington University, St Louis, MO.

He worked as a senior financial analyst and portfolio manager for Prudential Financial and he worked for the City of Newark, NJ as a Program Manager of the Newark’s Community Development Block Grant Program.

In 1980, he was the founder and CEO of Connection Cable Communications (CCC), Newark’s first city-wide cable television system. It was the largest independent African-American-owned and operated system in the history of this country. Mr. Washington spearheaded the launch without any major company involvement.

The sale of CCC was featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal in 1987. Subsequently, Mr. Washington founded and operated companies in Telecommunications and Marketing. Currently, in addition to providing consultation services for small and large businesses, he is a contributing writer for The Oakland Post and other African American publications.

Mr. Washington is a proud member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York.
