What advice would you give to your 20-year old self?

Invest in Microsoft, intel, Berkshire Hathaway, and other high performing stocks. But really it is to, learn how to type and work on my communication skills. I dropped typing class in 12th grade so I could go home early, and I still type slow. Although I studied mechanical engineering at MIT without needing to take a writing class to graduate, I was able to significantly improve my communication skills over time with a lot of work.

What are the biggest wastes of time in your profession or area of expertise?

Trying to work with people who think that they know everything. If someone does not think they need help, there is not much you can do for them until they see the light.

Tell me about one of the darker periods you have experienced in life. How you came out of it and what you learned from it?

Real Estate Crisis 2008-2010. I owned rental properties in Florida, the hardest-hit area in the country. Took 3+ years to work through and dispose of properties. Learned to persevere in adverse conditions over a long period of time and work together with various stakeholders to survive.

What is one thing that you do that you feel has been the biggest contributor to your success so far?

Not being afraid to take on challenges and continually learning from experience and educational pursuits – both formal and informal.

What is your morning routine?

Take vitamins, drink a lot of water, and eat something. Usually, no meetings before noon on Mondays and 10 am on other days so that I can plan and prepare for having the most productive day possible.

What habit or behavior that you have pursued for a few years has most improved your life?

Working virtually and integrating more technology into running my business. The increase in productivity and impact is amazing. Also, I can do so many things as a small business that only large companies could do in the past.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, or have lost your focus temporarily, what do you do?

I like building, repairing, and tinkering with things around the house. It takes my focus away from work and is relaxing for me. Plus, I enjoy problem-solving and it is great to see the physical result of my work.

What book(s) have influenced your life the most? Why?

Why should white guys have all the fun? by Reggie Lewis. Inspired by his hard work, confidence, perseverance, and ability to not take things personally or make excuses. Plus, his ability to accomplish something that nobody had ever accomplished up to that point in history.

Do you have any quotes you live by or think of often?

  • “Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

  • “You must see it before you can do it.”

  • “I have seen the enemy and it is us.”

  • “The more you know the faster you grow.”
